Sikkim

Sikkim compresses the Eastern Himalaya into one small state: from the easy-going capital Gangtok you climb in a single morning to the sacred, snow-ringed Tsomgo Lake and on to Nathula — one of the world's highest motorable passes, on the old Lhasa trade route. On clear autumn days, Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) owns the skyline.

Best time to visit

March to May for rhododendron blooms, or October to December for the clearest Kanchenjunga views — monsoon months (June–September) bring landslide-prone mountain roads.

Tsomgo (Changu) Lake

A sacred glacial lake at 3,753 m, about 40 km up the mountain road from Gangtok — oval, prayer-flag ringed, partly frozen through winter, with yaks saddled for rides along the shore.

Nathula Pass

At 4,310 m on the historic Lhasa trade route at the India–China border, one of the world's highest motorable passes — visited on a Protected Area Permit and closed to visitors on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Rumtek Monastery

Sikkim's largest monastery, about 23 km from Gangtok — seat-in-exile of the Karmapa lineage, where butter-lamp prayers start the day in the main hall.

Kanchenjunga viewpoints

The world's third-highest mountain (8,586 m) anchors Sikkim's horizon — Tashi Viewpoint near Gangtok catches it at sunrise, most reliably from October to December.

MG Marg, Gangtok

The capital's pedestrian-only promenade — traffic-free, litter-free by law, and lined with momo joints and cafes for the evening stroll.

Gangtok Ropeway

A cable-car ride above the capital's stacked ridgeline houses, with the Ranipool valley dropping away below.
