France

Paris boulevards to Riviera blue — the classic Europe trip, done properly

France pairs the world's most-visited museum city with its most glamorous coastline. Start with Paris — the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre's glass pyramid, Versailles' Hall of Mirrors — then take the fast train south to where the Alps meet the Mediterranean: Nice's seven-kilometre promenade, the perched village of Èze, and tiny Monaco next door.

Best time to visit

April–May and September–October — mild weather, shorter museum queues and shoulder-season pricing; the Riviera stays pleasant nearly year-round, and March means the shortest lines at the Eiffel Tower and Louvre.

Worth your days

Top attractions in France

The illuminated Eiffel Tower at night, seen across the Seine beyond the gilded statues of Pont Alexandre III

Eiffel Tower

Built in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle and now around 330 m tall with its antennas — take the lifts to the summit at sunset for the city turning gold.

The Louvre's glass pyramid glowing gold at dusk, flanked by the palace's ornate stone wings

The Louvre

The world's most-visited museum, entered through I. M. Pei's 1989 glass pyramid — the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo top most lists, but the medieval fortress foundations below surprise everyone.

The Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, its crystal chandeliers and gilded statues lit under a frescoed vaulted ceiling

Palace of Versailles

Louis XIV's UNESCO-listed palace 20 km from Paris — its Hall of Mirrors runs 73 m with 357 mirrors, and the gardens' musical fountain shows run in season.

Notre-Dame's towers and spire lit up at dusk on the Île de la Cité, reflected in the Seine

Seine river cruise

The riverbanks themselves are UNESCO-listed — glide past Notre-Dame, restored and reopened in December 2024 after the 2019 fire.

The pebble beach and curving seafront of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, with the city stretching along the bay

Nice & the Promenade des Anglais

Seven kilometres of Mediterranean seafront backed by an old town whose flower market fills Cours Saleya — Nice's Riviera townscape earned its own UNESCO listing in 2021.

The medieval village of Èze perched on its rocky pinnacle above the Riviera coastline, hazy sea and hills behind

Monaco & Èze

The world's second-smallest country — the 1863 Casino de Monte-Carlo and walkable F1 corners — reached along a corniche that passes Èze, a medieval village perched 430 m above the sea.
